I mean, in the book, I argue that Gramsci's ideas about conjunctural analysis, about the Southern question, you know, resonate with a multiple other Southern questions in terms of racism, colonialism, uneven capitalist development.

And I build on insights in radical geography, in political and social theory by figures like Jillian Hart, Stefan Kipfer, Ayaz Malik, and others to suggest the need to globalize and translate.

Gramsci's insights into different selves, the many selves of the capitalist world system, from the American South to the Caribbean, from South Africa to Southern Europe, and to, if you like, globalize Gramsci.

And the way I argue that this can proceed is by placing Gramsci into dialogue with what he called organic intellectuals, by which he mean political leaders, theorists, those who are engaged in concrete struggles to intervene in particular conjunctures.

and the specific conjuncture that had led to the making of an authoritarian racist police state in this post-World War II period.

And in doing so, I think that first writings from this period give us useful insights about how to do a conjunctural analysis of racist and colonial capitalism's connections to authoritarian and fascist political projects.

And this, I think, is quite vital in our own moment of resurgent fascism because, again, as Jillian Hart has pointed out, the South African apartheid state is a precedent for the fascism of our time.

So let me just take us back into that period for a moment.
