There is a place in the world where rain falls and the ground swallows it whole.

The ground is flat, the jungle is dense, and the water is invisible.

It is all beneath your feet, moving through underground channels carved by millions of years of dissolution, flowing in the dark through caverns you will never see from the surface.

There are no mountain passes to control, no river valleys to irrigate, no natural harbors to defend.

The geography offers almost nothing that traditional models of civilization consider necessary.

And yet, on this landscape, this place that seems to refuse the most basic requirement of human settlement, one of the most sophisticated civilizations in human history, built itself from nothing and endured for more than two thousand years.

The Maya did not choose this land despite its difficulty, They chose it, or they were born into it, and either way they mastered its difficulty.

They learned it, they read it, they engineered around its every limitation, and they built a world that still, even now, has not fully revealed itself.

The key to everything was the cenote.
