Uxmal

The Maya tracked lunar eclipses, calculated the synodic periods of Mars and Jupiter, and built architectural alignments that corresponded to celestial events.

The observatory at Uxmal and possibly the round tower at Chichen Itza, known as the Karakul, appear to have been designed with windows aligned to specific points on the horizon where Venus rises and sets at its extremes.

How they achieved this precision, without telescopes, without metal instruments, without any of the technological apparatus that European astronomers would later consider essential, is a question that research has not fully resolved.

The answer almost certainly involves generations of priests recording nightly observations from the summits of pyramids, datasets accumulated over lifetimes, refined and corrected with each generation, producing accuracy through duration rather than technology.

It has waited twelve hundred years.

It can wait a little longer.

The few survivors were bluntly herded to the city.

And Chichen Itza is the cosmic Mayan university.

Uxmal, where we're going to go on our retreat, is the cosmic feminine university.

Mayapan, which is an open right now, was the blend, was the blend of the two.

And these were schools.

The term encompasses a 200-year period when city centres were abandoned and farmers gradually moved to lands to the north and south.

As Tikal and dozens of other cities were abandoned, places such as Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Mayapan, further north on the Yucatan Peninsula, grew rapidly, as did settlements in the highlands to the south.

It appears as if many people during Classic Maya times chose to migrate rather than simply waiting around as things fell apart around them.

We don't really talk of the collapse anymore, but about decline, transformation and reorganisation of society and continuation of the culture, said Kenneth E. Seligson, an associate professor of archaeology at California State University.

So here just wanted to just show that I believe these are not lions, but lionesses.

And I really looked at that and that was lovely to see in Uxmal.

I'm not sure if there's a male and female leopard or actually two females.

Because Ishtar actually has two lionesses under her feet.
