Before John Carpenter froze Antarctica in the thing and invaded San Francisco with aliens in They Live, or turned Chinatown into a supernatural theme park in Big Trouble in Little China, he took the whole of Manhattan, built a wall around it, and filled it with every criminal America could no longer be bothered to deal with.

Unfortunately, that man is a convicted bank robber with one eye, no respect for authority and all the enthusiasm as somebody being asked to cover another person's Sunday shift.

John Carpenter put an eyepatch on him, lowered his voice by three octaves and created Snake Plissken.

Set in the distant future of 1997, Escape from New York is part western, part sea thriller, part prison movie, and possibly the greatest video game never made.

The Duke is A number one, Snake is running out of time, and Manhattan has only become marginally harder to park in.

Of course, today we are talking about Escape from New York, and it's time to get to the cheddar.
