In the Electrek Podcast, we discuss the most popular news in the world of sustainable transport and energy. In this week’s episode, we discuss Tesla…
All right, so what's new here? What's new? Just, uh, I, I, I kinda called it.
Uh, back in May, I came out with this report that the solar roof tiles was on life support at Tesla.
And sure enough, I can confirm as of yesterday that Tesla has officially killed the solar roof tile program after...
Um, I mean, not a decade of installation, maybe like six, seven years of installation.
But, you know, a decade of, um, [lip smack] since the program was originally announced.
Uh, so the, um, I have two sources that were able to confirm that, that Tesla told third-party installers that, uh, they won't be shipping any solar roof tiles anymore.
Um, the-- And one of the, those sources, you know, close to Tesla's, um, management on this, um, basically said that they, they admitted that, uh, the financial viability of the, the roof tiles are just, you know, are not there.
Um, from our information, like it peak at like 30 or 40 roof, something like that, like no more than that.
Uh, so it's like, it's, it's quite a failure of a program based on what they were expecting.
And, um, yeah, I think, I think we, we need to do a little bit of a debrief on this because I think one- once you, you, you dive a little bit deeper-- And, oh, by the way, so this is based on our sources, and, you know, Tesla hasn't confirmed anything on this.
But on the website, if you go on the Tesla solar roof URL, it redirects now to the Tesla solar panels URL.
I think, I think it's the best information from Tesla we're gonna get, considering Tesla's level of communication on these things.
Um, but yeah, if we, um, if we go back in time a little bit and go back to 2016 in Hollywood on the set of Des- Desperate Housewives [laughs] because that's where, that's actually where it was, on the real set.
Um, there was a lot of competition in solar installation in the US at the time.
