[upbeat music] My name's Mark Henry Phillips.

For the past dozen years, I made a living as a composer, music for commercials for clients like Google, Nike, and Ford, scoring indie films, making music for podcasts, podcasts like Serial, Startup, This American Life, and Homecoming.

It isn't exactly what I dreamed of when I was a kid and I decided I wanted to be a musician, but on most days, I counted myself lucky.

I was making a decent living by playing music.

get together? Go drinking and carrying on, you know? And all of a sudden, there's this traffic jam, people honking and everything in the middle of Beach Boulevard, and some guy had broken down out there.

We decided to go push him into the station to help him, you know? So we run out there, we start to push him in, and I'm noticing on his, he had an old pickup truck, I think it was a Ford.

He had painted with a paintbrush, Jesus lives, Jesus loves you, and all this stuff all over the side of his truck, the back of his truck, the hood of his truck, everything.

And it was just how things were then, the hippie kind of movement time.

But I think the most interesting part was Safir was CEO of Ford X, so I assume that was into automotives.

It was Ford's venture incub-incubator in Silicon Valley.

He helped build and scale fourteen ventures to more than twenty-five million in new revenue.

This was interesting, and, uh, he founded Gillette Labs inside Procter & Gamble and led the team behind the heated razor.
