A 50-Year-Old Pipe Support Company Where 100 Employees Now Build Their Own AI Agents

So I first got into Bitcoin because I met Brian Armstrong at Y Combinator Demo Day.

Oh, wow.

At his demo day.

And actually like all three of us, he went to Rice.

And that was maybe my first or second YC demo day.

And I was learning how to invest in early stage tech.

And it was sort of like ready, fire, aim.

I told myself I was going to go and write checks into two companies.

And Coinbase was in my shortlist that class, but I did not understand Bitcoin at all.

I was like, what the hell is this? I couldn't even say it was like magic internet money.

I didn't know what it was.

And so I came back after Demo Day.

I invested in two companies, not Coinbase.

Everyone who invests in early stage startups, they have an anti-portfolio, like companies that they might have invested in but didn't.

And Coinbase is one of those for me.

And Brian and I connected nicely on the YC Demo Day floor, but Didn't invest.

I did buy Bitcoin later.

And then people in my office at my software company, they got me into mining.

So I built at one point something like 46 GPU mining rigs.

Mining not Bitcoin, but Ethereum.

That was the thing that I was mining in.

We had moved out of our house, actually, like two doors down from where you used to live.

And the former Mrs. Yates still lives.

That's right.

And my old house, I convinced my wife, she's always up for my shenanigans, to run these miners out of the house because it was hard to find all the power you needed to run all these rigs.
