Not only are the people who are suffering not really human and people we need to worry about and we are superior and J.D. Vance is there going, trying to spin a theology saying our duty is just to care about our inner circle and screw the rest of you.

And, you know, Pope Leo's like, actually, no, right? I mean...

Then there's another element where, you know, what is holding up not just the U.S. economy, but the global economy right now is AI, which many people believe is a bubble.

But whether it's a bubble or not, it is, and this is the argument we make in the book, it's a world-devouring technology.

Now, I want to be clear.

As Pope Leo beautifully said in Magnifica Humanitas, technology is not intrinsically evil.

It's meaningful because produced by the human genius.

The point is make the human factor matter also in how we decide to use technology.

I'm betting it will be, though.

It's an environmental season, and they've been talking ecological sins as, because they need a whole new category of sin to sell their lie.

really a question of of whether or not we're who where we're paying attention to whom and to what that doesn't then breed passivity so for example you know this kind of gentleness does not mean not engaging it doesn't mean not being in the vortex of the struggle it doesn't mean stepping away to a quiet peaceable place necessarily it's about bringing a quiet peaceable place to the middle of the conflict exactly right this has been one of the things i've admired so much about the Pope Leo, because in so many cases he's quite willing to step right into the vortex of the tension.

But then he speaks out of this depth of tradition and then personal appropriation of that tradition in his own being.

which then allows him to speak out of a spirit of gentleness, using the word you've highlighted, in a way that subverts not just the actual long-term substance of the questions being debated, but the manner in which those things can even come to conversation to begin with.

It's really, it's an extraordinary combination.

Well, I mean, what's often so interesting about Pope Leo is, especially because he's, although he recently pushed back against this term, but I'll use it here, you know, first American pope, or because he has an American sort of background, he gets more attention.

questions that are flowing from the American political imagination than I think any Pope has received.

And it is just always so striking that, yes, he did spend time in America.

But I finished the book in the Jubilee Year of Hope, which made a powerful impression on me, and, you know, I was hopeful then, but little did I know that by the time I finished the book, we'd have a new pope, and I just about managed to put him in the epilogue.

But I, I, I have to say that despite s- seeing some very sad things, I've also seen some very hopeful things in the book, Vatican II, renewal, uh, scandal, but rebuilding from that scandal And, you know, Leo XIV, I can't praise highly enough in some ways because he's not had the pugnaciousness or the divisiveness of Francis, but he's also not been grinding the church into reverse.

He's got a mathematics degree, which is quite rare for a pope.
