Coinbase

Founded in 2012, Coinbase is the leading cryptocurrency exchange platform in the United States. The company intends to be the safe and regulation-compliant point of entry for retail investors and institutions into the cryptocurrency economy. Users can establish an account directly with the firm, instead of using an intermediary, and many choose to allow Coinbase to act as a custodian for their cryptocurrency, giving the company breadth beyond that of a traditional financial exchange. While the company still generates the majority of its revenue from transaction fees charged to its retail customers, Coinbase uses internal investment and acquisitions to expand into adjacent businesses, such as prime brokerage and data analytics.www.coinbase.com

Either pay the consumer the fair interest on their money or launch a stable coin and offer something similar.
Tony EdwardHOST
7:08
Because if you offer the consumers the fair yield and stop pocketing the big bonuses, guess what the consumers are going to stay with you but we know again guys what the mo is right end of year bonuses we got to keep a majority of the money give the people the breadcrumbs 0.01 but competition get in the game offer something good so the us banking regulator is encouraging small lenders to develop stablecoin services as new federal licensing requirements approach And if you guys recall, Coinbase, they partnered with some other companies called Move, and I forgot the other one, but to help these community banks to be able to offer this stablecoin and crypto services.
Tony EdwardHOST
7:49
So the technology is there.

The relationships are there.

One is I put out on the terminal last week my thoughts on the cftc's ampr on regulation crypto assets uh this is just an ampr uh this is essentially several questions of how the cftc would actually go ahead and uh control and regulate cryptocurrencies i'm just going to pull up my note real quick just to give you the highlights but you know because it's in a NPR just please note it has to be finalized with a proposal and we think that proposal is going to come in the first part of next year and so essentially what this will do is is that it will create new market definitions there's going to be something called regulation crypto asset transactions which transactions fall within the jurisdiction of cftc which transactions fall under the jurisdiction of the sec and which transactions like bitcoin which is a commodity falls outside because this does not give the cftc the authority to regulate spot crypto uh and so you know this is one of those things where i looked at it and i was like okay this is great from the robin hood coinbase bullish perspective It will give a clear pathway on margin to leverage financing for crypto, but it's not going to be the end all be all.
Nathan DeanGUEST
12:01
And the other thing on crypto is the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency finalized its stablecoin rule.
Nathan DeanGUEST
12:06
And as a reminder, on the stablecoin side, the banks were not happy because of these reward programs that stablecoin issuers were dealing with Coinbase, for example, to create rewards because the Genius Act prohibited the paying of interest or yield.
Nathan DeanGUEST
12:21
But that didn't prohibit somebody like Coinbase to offer a reward program that sort of looked like interest or yield.
Nathan DeanGUEST
12:28
But what the OCC did in its proposal is they said, look, any form of agreement, any form of handshake between a stablecoin issuer or this third-party platform would institute interest or yield.
Nathan DeanGUEST
12:39
So if you're coming at this from the crypto sector, you did not like this proposal.
Chad BarrafordGUEST
55:06
In a DEX, it's like a click and you're done and it's fast, it's efficient and it's really, really cheap, better pricing.
Chad BarrafordGUEST
55:12
We don't have the operational costs of large Coinbase that has hundreds and hundreds of developers.
Chad BarrafordGUEST
55:17
And so we can just operate a lot smoother, faster, cheaper, more fluidly than what they can do.
Chad BarrafordGUEST
55:23
And so we should be able to beat them out in the long term.
Nounish ProfHOST
8:26
Now we want developers to put it to the test.
Nounish ProfHOST
8:29
And this is backed by or being run by Coinbase.
Nounish ProfHOST
8:35
So Coinbase is sort of in the background helping with this.

Balaji SrinivasanGUEST
56:05
And I, I believe in education.
Balaji SrinivasanGUEST
56:06
I believe in free teaching, but coming back, the, the, um, the basic issue, the crypto economy topped out because these transactions, like when you're doing a swap, a trustless swap, it's with a stranger, okay? It's like, all right, go away, you know? And they're talking to them again, right? When you do a trade on exchange, you don't even know who your counterparty is.
Carlos NettoGUEST
18:39
So it's public how much money the bank has.
Carlos NettoGUEST
18:43
If you send like a dollar from Coinbase or Kraken to a friend and you get the Tx hash and you go to blockchain scan, you're going to see the sender is not you.
Carlos NettoGUEST
18:53
The sender is Coinbase Bot Wallet 0 or Coinbase Bot Wallet 2.
Carlos NettoGUEST
18:57
Because Coinbase sends all the money from the same Bot Wallet.
Carlos NettoGUEST
19:02
They implement all exchanges.
Carlos NettoGUEST
19:04
Let me talk about Coinbase because they're famous.
Carlos NettoGUEST
19:06
But every exchange in the world, basically, they work this way.
Carlos NettoGUEST
19:10
And to the right, you have the client's balance.
Joël ValenzuelaGUEST
4:20
And so people who put in proposals using their Dash Core wallet, they're like full node software or whatever, pay one Dash anti-spam fee, the request goes out to the network, the masternodes vote.
Joël ValenzuelaGUEST
4:33
And based on the results of that vote... then people get Coinbase rewards like they just got mined, like freshly mined, technically freshly mined, even though miners didn't get it straight to whatever payout address you determine.
Joël ValenzuelaGUEST
4:49
So I put in a proposal and if it gets funded, then the address I specified just gets a payout from the block reward and with, again, a Coinbase reward.
Joël ValenzuelaGUEST
5:00
So it's from the same basic system, but it's a completely, you know, Dash Core Group also gets paid from the same system, but they don't need to know I even exist or who I am or somewhere else.
Joël ValenzuelaGUEST
5:13
And I could just get paid out from the same system.

Danny CarpioGUEST
3:42
Because again, that's surface area for us to have common understanding, to have this conversation around.
Danny CarpioGUEST
3:47
We're seeing these announcements of... what are basically mega corporations, right? These mega cap companies, um, Coinbase, Cloudflare, uh, Meta, formerly Facebook, Block, formerly Square, um, you know, Amazon, uh, Salesforce, you name it, they're all seeing the writing on the wall and the main thing that they're doing that is relevant to this conversation is they are stripping out management layers and they are re-architecting how their organizations function, okay? Because the underlying premise is is gone that uh the way they uh they were uh structured is optimal and they will lose in their own competition with each other if they don't address those issues now there's other issues that they are dealing with as far as pricing pressure um and just market dynamics that are making them have to revisit the fundamental assumptions of how to operate at scale, which no longer favors their prior structure, these large, vertically sort of, I guess, hierarchical institutional structures.
Danny CarpioGUEST
5:01
So... what that tells me is that they know that the unit of scale has moved down and out of the institutional firm structure.
Danny CarpioGUEST
5:09
And what I think that is and what I know to be true is that that is the individual.
Eddie ZhangGUEST
24:29
At the same time, I think last year, it was maybe surprising to them, their rapid crypto adoption.
Eddie ZhangGUEST
24:35
So Robinhood's crypto offering is relatively new, but as of I think the last quarter, they were neck and neck in the US with Coinbase, which is obviously historically by far the biggest crypto SAX in America.
Eddie ZhangGUEST
24:51
And so I think the combination of the two combined to birth the chain.
Eddie ZhangGUEST
24:55
So we started conversations with them around December of last year.
