Actually, this is in, in the world of Hal Jordan's probably the least pilot focused introduction to Hal Jordan I've ever seen in my life.

[laughs]

Because usually we are really leaning on the fact that this dude's a pilot.

This time we definitely get a taste of it from the very beginning, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

This is season one, episode one, pilot of Lanterns.

It was written by Chris Mundy, David Lindelof, and Tom King, directed by James Hawes, who's done some slow horses.

If you are a fan of Apple TV shows, I.e. spent years making fun of them, uh, not anymore.

What a year they're having, uh, for just good quality programming.

Anyway, we're not talking about that.

We're back talking about HBO.

This week on Lanterns, we open with a visit to 1996, where little John Stewart is learning about Hal Jordan on television, and it's making his brothers nervous.

When their father come home, comes home, he responds by testing his youngest's fear levels with apple and a gun.

Then we're off to 2016, where Stewart is now apprenticed to Jordan.

He's frustrated with the training program and his oft hungover mentor.

And along the bumpy road to lunch at a taco stand, Stewart learns that there's a hail in Rushville, Nebraska emergency.

And after traveling to Nebraska by uniquely different means, John and Hal investigate a mass shooting at a football field that very likely involves some aliens.

They immediately run afoul of the local sheriff, played by Kelly Macdonald, which we saw on Dave and Neil's Pop Culture Adventure recently on Trainspotting.

Mm-hmm.
