Episode 6 of Chatty Miles was recorded in the midst of a brutal heatwave, with Julia and Kate both appearing incredibly sticky and dishevelled (luckily for everyone, this is a podcast with no…
Charles GreenGuestWelcome back for episode six of Chatty Miles.
This feels like a significant milestone as it means half a year of us chatting your ears off about all things running, interviewing local guests and generally bringing you along for the ride.
I can't believe how quickly it's gone.
If you've been listening from the UK you'll know we've recently been hit by a proper heatwave.
Yeah, it feels like a very British thing to talk about the weather, but I do think in this case it's justified.
So we thought we'd start by catching up on how we've been coping in the heat and share some practical tips for running in hot weather.
Kate, how about you? Have you managed to get out for any runs, particularly this week? It's been crazy, hasn't it?
I did track session on Monday, obviously.
Wouldn't miss that for anything.
But that was before it got really hot.
And
I think we had a nice breeze on Monday, didn't we? Yeah.
Also, it was in the evening, so it was marginally nicer than it would be, say, middle of the day.
yeah and then I think I next ran on Wednesday morning before work because I got up at 5 45 because I was going into the office that was an early one oh it was rough I just I'm not a morning runner I could I was probably a good like six minutes slower over a 5k than I'd usually be it was tough but you've been going out um quite a bit in the sunshine yeah
I did two lunchtime runs out of the four really hot days, but I couldn't face it today.
I didn't feel good after, but it probably wasn't
very sensible.
I did read actually that your heart rate will rise significantly, even if you're doing the same pace, but in a hotter environment.
What I read online said it could be around five to 15 beats per minute higher in hot conditions.
So let's say if your easy run was normally 145 beats per minute, then you wouldn't be surprised if it was sitting at more like 155 or 165.
That tracks.
I really felt that.
For me, I measure in sweat, actually.
And on Wednesday morning, it was six o'clock.
It was like 23 degrees already or something.
