Okay, what you and Tom were talking about is the discipline of interpretation is called hermeneutics.

It typically applies to Christian scripture because hermeneutics comes from the high middle ages, as does Umberto Eco, actually.

He says in the postscript to The Name of the Rose, I know what I know about the present world through television.

We're talking about Western Europe, University of Bologna, University of Turin, that kind of thing.

So the High Middle Ages was the peak of, I guess, the establishment of scholasticism, which is associated with Thomas Aquinas.

There are three categories or three directions, as I've put in this graphic, for interpretation.

This is part of the pedagogical system and the higher education system, along with religious training, which is inseparable from all of this, because that's what universities were.

uh uh in in the high middle ages and really up until whenever the enlightenment reached into the university of bologna and they changed all the textbooks and
everything

um so this is definitely the world that umberto echo is coming from and philip k dick is not unfamiliar with it philip k dick is deceptively uh his writing is deceptive because he is brilliant

So there are three areas, three directions for interpretation, and I put this on the horizontal axis there.

I guess you'd call that the x-axis if you consider that left to right as being time and life.

That's the past and the present is the axis, and then the future is the arrow pointing to our right.

And that's a literal interpretation which relies on causality, physicality, known facts.
