I grew up in Minnesota, which, you know, felt like I was in an ice plunge for the first 18 years of my life, but no, not as you're saying.

Here is the way that I experience it and the way that I experience bracing cold in the way that maybe you have.

Your first thought when you go into an ice plunge is, "Oh my God, what is happening? I've made a huge mistake." And then you start to have a conversation with yourself.

There is beauty on the other side of this pain." You breathe deep, your focus narrows, and you don't just abide the pain, you start to embrace it.

Maybe you enter a trance-like state, living both in the moment and somehow outside of time.

That, Craig, is basically my experience with The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat, and I would argue it's an experience most connected to cold, to friction, to the harsh light of winter.
