And then we got on to talking about Walk On The Wild Side, which I've seen used in lots of ads, most recently a car ad.

knows what you want to do in the car if you're going to buy it on the basis of a walk on the wild side.

I think they're trying to suggest that the product will spice up the buyer's life, and no doubt it will.

A bit of drugs, perversion, S&M, transvestism, all the good gear.

Anyway, that's by the by.

But creative directors, yeah, they base a whole campaign based on a couple of words in the song.

This guy at my work, of course, we were talking about... of we were talking about actually my master's thesis he was asking me how it was going because he was leaving he was visiting somebody and i started talking about uh different things like the difference between like superman 2 the regular version and the donner cut like how they cut out brando because they didn't want to pay him any more money but they had already filmed his scenes in like 77. so they were already done so and he's like oh because he was asking when he came out and all these things he's like well 77 was a great year for music because things were changing musically we were talking about like you know like the talking heads were coming out and like all these things and i was like we have a lot of that stuff was in oh and you're talking about the punk scene And I'm like, yeah, that was influenced by the glam scene and like the Velvet Underground and Lou Reed and Lou Reed's album Transformer.

And I started to talk about like Walking the Wild Side and, you know, Perfect

Day.

Yeah.

He's, he's taking his heroes and putting them in the spotlight, and it worked.

Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side was a Top 40 hit and played on Top 40 radio alongside The Carpenters and really mainstream music.

Top 40 radio, people should understand that it was supposed to be drawing from all s- And it did.

It drew from all sorts of music simultaneously.

And I guess what I'm saying with that was that it wasn't as though we were hiding, but we were there in plain sight.

We just didn't have the language or the media or the access to, to know what was what.

I, I think Walk on the Wild Side was a top 40 hit because people did not understand what was going on with that song.

It just sounded sort of wild and, and it had a hypnotic groove to it.

He was one of the most legendary session bassists in rock history.

He created the iconic dual bass line on Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side and played on David Bowie's Space Oddity.

Screamin' Scott Simon of Sha Na Na passed away in 2024 at the age of 75 from cancer.

The long-tenured pianist for Sha Na Na spent 52 years touring with the band.
