“We Saw Things That Human Eyes Should Never See” | Dean Elsdunne

And it must have been traumatic as well.

I, I took that trauma, and I really...

First of all, I ha- I, I can't take any credit for getting through that trauma.

I had a support system at home, my wife, who was there with me-

Mm

... um, who understood.

She was pregnant at the time, and so it was, it was very difficult to personally turn that switch off.

One second, you're standing over dead bodies, the next second, you're walking through your door, and you're coming home, and you need to leave all that at the threshold of the door.

But she understood that she-- her support wasn't in Miluim.

Her support was here.

This was her role, to support me, to support the nation.

And, uh, and she was great, and she helped me through it, and, uh, thank God.

Thank God for that.

Absolutely.

Um, you also showed me around Kfar Aza, and of course, one of the places worst hit was that area where the young people live-

Right

... right on the fence where Hamas terrorists infiltrated early morning, and that, to my understanding, has not yet been rebuilt, but a lot of Kfar Aza has been rebuilt, and people are moving back.

We're now, you know, around three years on from that terrible day.

Do you have any strong feeling about what we need to do to memorialize that? I know there's a lot of debate about whether you leave the destruction, whether you completely rebuild.

Do you have thoughts on that?

I'm very conflicted.

It's hard for me to give my opinion on a place that's not my home-

Mm

... um, that's not mine to give the opinion, so to say.

And it must have been traumatic as well.
