In this episode of Rising Voices of Fundraising: The AFP Emerging Leaders Podcast, we asked attendees at AFP ICON to reflect on the unplanned career moments that helped shape who they are today. From…
My name is Elena Burr, and I'm the Director of Communications and Outreach for All Thrive 365.
We're a social impact organization that's dedicated to helping Arizonans age with confidence through health, housing, and connection programs.
And something I would share about my career trajectory is actually a piece of advice that made me very uncomfortable the first time I heard it.
So a few years ago, a mentor of mine said to find what you do really well easily and get people to pay you for it.
And that initially struck my ear very weird, 'cause we are in the nonprofit social impact sector.
We're supposed to be selfless and giving, and it's not about us, right? And so initially I was, I was taken aback by that.
And so when I had some time to really sit with it, now I've come to realize how leaning into the strengths that you have to offer, that's the greatest gift that you can give the sector, is leaning into what makes you uniquely, innately you, and letting that power grow.
And so leaning into that, leaning into my strengths, was the foundation of forming my consulting business, Kindling Impact Consulting.
And so now I'm able to grow in an uninhibited way and give back to the community that I love and I care deeply for in a way that takes care of myself as well.
And so what I would share with emerging leaders is to lean into your strengths, and if you feel like you've got a skill set that feels maybe too, too natural or innate or something that you don't feel brings value but is so innately you, I would challenge that assumption.
Because the sector doesn't need your sacrifice, it needs your brilliance, and you can only be the best version of yourself, be the best professional for this sector that so desperately needs it, if you don't shy away from your strengths.
