460: CMJ Testing and UCL Injury Risk

Uh, don't join a cult.

But hey, we have an article today.

The article submitted by Michael is, uh-

Ooh

...

when was this published? This was...

Where?

25?

Yeah, it's...

This was 2025.

This is, uh, American Journal of Sports Medicine, "An Inferential Investigation into Countermovement Jump Determinants of Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injuries in Collegiate Baseball Pitchers." What a title.

Uh-

[laughs]

We'll get to that in a second.

The background on this, uh, well, obviously UCL injuries are high burden in professional baseball and, and elite baseball.

And we're gonna make an immediate jump in logic and say that there was one study that showed some relationship between some countermovement jump metrics and, uh, UCL injuries or UCL strain.

I actually didn't read the one study that they were basing this whole thing off of.

Mm.

Me either.

Um, I think it was, it was just this injury status.

So it was, like, those who, um, had some of these higher countermoving jump force-

Yeah

... metrics went on to have UCL injuries.

Uh, and so this study is trying to validate that in a different population, I guess.

So, um, took a group of collegiate pitchers, 19 Division 1 collegiate baseball pitchers, and they had them throw in a motion lab, um, with, uh, with plates under them so they were able to calculate forces and torque and var- elbow vari- elbow varigus torque
