I wanted to offer a CFII Part 135 check airman perspective on the instrument check ride story from OB438, specifically regarding the circling approach discussion".
So the discussion was based on a couple issues that are coming up, one of them being a student's tendency to, uh, resort to habits that they've developed during training, where they reach the minimum descent altitude, which is a non-precision approach, the lowest you can go, and you're supposed to circle to the landing runway at that altitude, and then only descend from MDA when you're in a position to land the airplane.
Well, one of the stories we heard, because they were used to doing it in training, and the instructor was saying, "All right, go visual", and there was other traffic, the applicant climbed back up to traffic pattern altitude to mix in with already practicing VFR pattern traffic at that airport, and was given a disapproval for it because they climbed from the minimum descent altitude instead of descending when they were in a position to land.
So-- And we had a discussion about fantasy land, and where does that stop? W- How do you brief that? How do you prepare an applicant to understand when the fake, uh, weather we've introduced and the-- you're taking off your view-limiting devices, when do you mix in with the real world again, and how do you do that? Is that enough?
