The con- the cr- the TRACON took the handoff.

Uh-huh.

Flights are beginning to take off again after the FAA ordered hours-long ground stops at some of the largest airports in the United States due to an air traffic controlled equipment outage on the East Coast.

According to Reuters, the widespread incident began late Monday morning when a circuit blew at the Philadelphia TRACON facility, which handles air traffic for Philadelphia and the New Jersey area.

The outage initially led to ground stops at Philadelphia International Airport, Newark Liberty International Airport, and New Jersey's private Teterboro Airport.

After high-profile equipment outages in the spring of 2025, the TRACON facility received a backup system that would kick on in the event of an equipment failure.

However, FAA Administrator Brian Bedford said that the backup fiber line was found to be accidentally cut by a construction crew in New Jersey and unable to provide assistance during Monday's incident, according to NBC News.

Throughout Monday afternoon, the ground stop expanded to major northeast hubs like New York LaGuardia, New York JFK, and Boston Logan International.

Right now, we're tracking JFK, uh, Newark Liberty International Airport, and these ground stops have been cited due to equipment outages by the FAA.

Now, part of what we've heard from, uh, the FAA, uh, to this point is that the, they issued ground stops due to issues with Philadelphia TRACON.

So that stands for Terminal Radar Approach Control.

It's essentially a facility that combines radar approach control and air traffic control operations.

Let's explain TRACONS because that's a very specific piece of jargon.

TRACONS stands for Terminal Radar Approach Control.

It is the highly complex radar-based system that manages airspace around busy airports.

New York airspace is one of the most heavily monitored, heavily controlled three-dimensional spaces on the planet.

Be looking and talking to that aircraft's data block.

If you're going through the TRACON portion of the academy, talk to the data blocks.

You're not talking to someone in, in the next room.

You're not even talking to a pilot.

In Florida, the concentration of launch pads now active at Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral, including SpaceX complexes, United Launch Alliance operations, and government programs, means some weeks see multiple launches within days of each other.

Terminal Radar Approach Control, or TRACON, facilities in Miami and Jacksonville have developed launch coordination procedures that work for the current pace, but controllers have acknowledged that the coordination workload is already significant.

At five or 10 times the current cadence, the present system would not hold.

California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on the Central Coast is the primary West Coast launch site, and its corridors reach into the Pacific and toward the Los Angeles Basin's complex airspace structure.

Yep.

Someone in the TRACON will utter the words, "Goose, do you see a trailer?"

"Negative, Merlin." [laughs]

If those rules are being bent in ways you cannot see from the left seat, the outcome can affect you directly.

You cannot audit the staffing levels at a TRACON from your pre-flight.

You cannot pull up the personnel records of the controller handling your approach.

What you can do is fly the procedure precisely, communicate clearly, and trust that the reports you file, the feedback pilots give, the data recorded on radar systems and voice recorders, all of it is the raw material from which accountability is built after the fact.

The FAA's ATC automation environment has been fundamentally transformed over the past two decades.

The Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, known as STARS, modernized TRACON, Terminal Radar Approach Control, workstations across the country.

En Route Automation Modernization, or ERAM, replaced the host computer system that had run en route centers since the nineteen seventies.

Performance-based navigation, Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast, or ADS-B, and data communications, sometimes called CPDLC for Controller Pilot Data Link Communications, have all been deployed to varying degrees across the National Airspace.

Audio delay measured in tens of milliseconds.

Reliability standards specify continuous operation through power anomalies and equipment failures that would take a commercial telecommunications s-s-sc-li- telecommunications li- cl-cl-cl-cl-cl-cl-cl And nationwide is the right scale to keep in mind.

The FAA operates more than three hundred ATC facilities across the National Airspace System, including twenty-one enroute centers, more than one hundred TRACONs, and hundreds of airport traffic control towers.

Not every facility requires the same scale of switching infrastructure, but the combined deployment is an enormous manufacturing and integration effort.
