Carlton LewisGUEST
31:52
And really, it's a lot like...
Carlton LewisGUEST
31:55
You know, me going and being educated by CFI and CFII, they know more than what I do.
Carlton LewisGUEST
32:03
And so when I get in the aircraft with them, it's time for me to be quiet, listen, and do.
Carlton LewisGUEST
32:10
Right.

11 MINS LATER

Joe CaseyHOST
43:23
Yeah, three months and two days, I got my third class medical back.
Joe CaseyHOST
43:27
I was elated because I'm a professional instructor.
Joe CaseyHOST
43:31
I will tell you, I learned real quick that a CFI can... can train with a third class.
Joe CaseyHOST
43:40
And so I was able to keep on flying.
ZachHOST
0:33
Thank you for tuning in.
ZachHOST
0:34
And today we're speaking with Ian, Ian, we've had on before as a student and now as a CFI.
ZachHOST
0:42
And I'm excited to talk about some of your experiences, some of what the transition's like.
ZachHOST
0:46
We were talking before this and you also talked about some of the things you're learning already.
ZachHOST
5:29
Hey,
IanGUEST
5:29
you're probably going to need help.
IanGUEST
5:30
You're a CFI now, so you
ZachHOST
5:31
were a student then.
CambryHOST
11:28
So I was a slow learner.
CambryHOST
11:31
Transferred CFIs about halfway through.
CambryHOST
11:34
And then I went the 141 route for one semester.
CambryHOST
11:39
I was not a big fan of how little I was flying and how long it was going to take.
CambryHOST
14:05
March 22.
CambryHOST
14:09
Four.
ShaneHOST
14:09
Okay, so two years in, you're a commercial pilot with your CFIs.
CambryHOST
14:14
CFIs, I did July of 24.
Max FlightHOST
1:54
Also joining us is Rob Mark.
Max FlightHOST
1:55
He's a BizJet pilot, a journalist, a CFI.
Max FlightHOST
1:58
He publishes Jetwine.com, and he also produces the Stories About Flying podcast.
Rob MarkPANELIST
2:04
Hey, wow.
Caressa BrayGUEST
12:45
For domestic students, the road is a little different.
Caressa BrayGUEST
12:48
Domestic students, you come into flight training, you get up to your commercial, then you go into learning for CFI, which is the certified flight instructor.
Caressa BrayGUEST
12:59
And from there, you start building your hours.
Caressa BrayGUEST
13:02
You got to have those 1500 to go to legacies and to regionals, which you start at regional first, and then you move your way up.
Caressa BrayGUEST
15:20
61, um, part six, excuse me, part 61 students.
Caressa BrayGUEST
15:26
There, there's still the learning that you have to do, but there's the timeframe is when you're able to go in flight train is when you go in flight train.
Caressa BrayGUEST
15:36
So there may, it may take a little bit longer because if you take months off and then you have to go and, um, relearn some skills that you got rusty on it's gonna the money adds up as far as the 1500 hours so that's you know you have your 250 and then you go and you add that 100 whatever the remainder is i don't do math math in my head for a reason but during that time You can choose to be a CFI where you're getting paid to fly and record your time.
Caressa BrayGUEST
16:14
So that time all builds up.
Kelly MurphyHOST
9:21
Do you think you'll kind of maybe enter into that at some point in your college career there?
Maddie AllenGUEST
9:27
Well, I'm hoping to get my CFI and CFII and maybe become an instructor there.
Maddie AllenGUEST
9:32
That would be the dream.
Maddie AllenGUEST
9:34
But yeah, we'll see what happens.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:16
Yeah, that's another good point because I feel like most of these kids these days, they are kids that are getting their licenses and ratings and they're getting it 1,500 hours.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:25
And that's maybe their first job that they've ever had as a CFI.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:28
And then, like you mentioned, they're building time as a CFI.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:30
And as a CFI, you're not flying.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:32
You sit there and tell people how to fly.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:33
Maybe you get to go do some unusual attitudes every now and then if you're lucky.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:37
Yeah, have a little bit of fun.
Hollie BellinoHOST
11:39
But that's really about it.
TedHOST
5:50
I also had another day of flying that did a couple of things.
TedHOST
5:53
I flew across town and then I flew with CFI Sam, Northwest Aeronaut, who really schooled me on the commercial maneuvers that I thought that I was doing okay at because he is just really good and understands the point of them and is very specific about how it's done.
TedHOST
6:12
So I learned a lot from that.
TedHOST
6:14
We were...
TedHOST
6:38
It's like, oh, man.
TedHOST
6:39
Yeah.
TedHOST
6:41
so he wasn't mad about it just kind of you know i was i was trying to work in this this narrow area and yeah so it was uh i was i don't know shame to get that that text then that same night we had somebody come in named luke who uh came into our discord named luke and who has a name very similar to to our luke last name is very similar to it but he's new wanting to get started and he said he was on that side of town i'm like hey I'm actually going to be over on your side of town tonight with CFI Sam.
TedHOST
7:14
Why don't you show up at the airport? We got back late, but he sat there and watched planes come in and land for half an hour.
Gino MoratoGUEST
3:06
I'm looking at two different avenues.
Gino MoratoGUEST
3:08
One is primarily to finish off my five years before I'm eligible to retire and just continuing to hammer out my ratings and build as much CFI time as I can if I get to that point.
Gino MoratoGUEST
3:19
I'm also debating, you know, Letting this contract expire and trying to go into the guard or reserves to finish up my training pipeline that way.
Gino MoratoGUEST
3:27
So it's kind of a balancing act to figure out what's most advantageous for myself and my family and just trying to make the best decision financially and just seeing where the wind takes me.

20 MINS LATER

Nick FialkaHOST
23:59
Okay.
Gino MoratoGUEST
24:00
So I know I'm going to chair fly in my birthing wherever I'm at, and I'm just going to continue to just, you know, religiously study the ACS, the FAR, the AIM, and everything from ground school, starting back from day one of private pilot all the way up through whatever current instrument I'm rated for to where I'm able to – I know I'm not going to be able to, but with the end state being that I can repeat things out of all of those knowledge books verbatim by the time I get back.
Nick FialkaHOST
24:27
Yeah, and as you're going toward CFI, even if you're not there yet, while you're deployed, you can learn – the things you need to learn about instructing
Gino MoratoGUEST
24:40
and,
Jess DavisHOST
0:00
There was a little foldable I'm safe pamphlet that I kept in my flight bag.
Jess DavisHOST
0:05
My CFI recommended it pretty early in my training along with one instruction.
Jess DavisHOST
0:10
Look at it before you get in the car.
Jess DavisHOST
0:12
Before the drive, before the pre-flight, before any of it.
Jess DavisHOST
0:24
My stomach had other plans.
Jess DavisHOST
0:27
I ended up canceling my training that day.
Jess DavisHOST
0:30
My CFI was supportive about it and the fee and the hit to my schedule came along with that call.
Jess DavisHOST
0:37
That folded piece of paper got me to make the decision at home before I'd driven anywhere or even touched the airplane.
