Lag\_BaOmer\_Explained\_\_Rabbi\_Shimon\_Bar\_Yochai\_Divine\_Providence\_\_Radical\_Faith
Our sages tell us that the time of the Omer is tinged with mourning, with sadness, with unfortunate events, because the great sage Rabbi Akiva had 24,000 students and they all died, they all perished.
And therefore, even though it's a sad day, it's a sad time, but it's, and therefore, even though it's a sad time, in general, there's this flicker of happiness, of joy, of ecstasy, of rehabilitation, of reclamation on the 33rd day of the Omer.
He was a student of Rabbi Akiva, and he passed on the 33rd day of the Omer, on Lag Bar Omer.
Why would we celebrate? Why would there be any degree of celebration, of happiness? a minor festival, if you will, on the day that someone that we cherished
passed.
And the answer is that when a great sage, a great tzaddik, a righteous person passes, they're not dying.
They're in this world, where their soul was being housed by a body, and now they're ascending to heaven where their soul is going to be untethered, unencumbered, unbridled by the existence of a body.
So it's a day of the promotion of Rabbi Shimon, and therefore we have some minor celebration.
