Shammai

Maintaining Torah-centered life while rulers shifted required a steady intellectual backbone rather than military strength.

The most famous pair of all, however, was Hillel and Shammai.

If the Zugot were a television series, these two would be the breakout stars.

Hillel was known for patience, accessibility, and interpretive flexibility.

Shammai was known for strictness and precision.

Their disagreements became foundational examples of structured legal debate within Judaism.

The schools that developed around them, Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai, debated practical matters constantly.

How exactly should Sabbath candles be lit? What counts as valid marriage procedure? How should ritual purity rules be applied? These were not abstract philosophy questions.

How many does it take to be numerous? So Bechame says numerous means at least two, which I might argue is not that numerous, but it's certainly more than one.

And the reason Beit Shammai says two, There's a verse in the book of Isaiah, where it says that a man will rear a young cow and two sheep.

meaning the two sheep being the minimum that you could have to have many sheep.

Why five in your flock? Beit Hillel takes a verse from the book of Samuel, the first book of Samuel, Shmuel Aleph, chapter 25, where it says that there were five sheep that were made.

And so therefore he gets his number from a verse.

and Beit Hill gets their number from a verse, and Beit Shammai gets their number from a verse, and now we've got two verses, five, Beit Hill versus Beit Shammai.

Rabbi Dosa Ben Harkin says, Rabbi Dosa Ben Harkin says that when you've got your five sheep, and you're shearing the wool of each sheep, you weigh a hundred dinar for each half a paras, of 100 dinar each, meaning you've got 150 dinar, are subject for that obligation for the first wool, for the first sheared wool, meaning that owner has to give the first sheared wool to the kohanim.

Then the chachamim omrim, the sages, this is again the majority view here in the Mishnah, says, The rabbi said, you've got five sheep.

Last couple of times we had Hillel.

Hillel's sparring mate in Torah was, of course, Shammai.

Each one of them founded their own institution that would last for more than 100 years.

So Hillel and Shammai really are the beginning of...

the major flourishing of oral Torah that's going to really accelerate in the first, second, third, fourth, fifth centuries.

This is Shammai.

This is Shammai's teaching.

What does he say? Make your Torah study a fixed practice.

And graceful, every bride, full stop.

One of the schools, Shammai, the first school, pushes back with the obvious question, what if, objectively speaking, she just isn't attractive? You would have us stand there and lie? And the school of Hillel responds with an argument that has echoed for 2,000 years.

And it says this, in the eyes of the groom, the person who chose her, she is beautiful.

And on that day of her joy, your job is to see her through his eyes and say so and sing it out, out loud in public.

Hillel was a woodcutter, we're told.

Shammai was a builder.

Yohanan was a sandal maker.

And here's what I love.

And then it gives two examples.

The conflict of Hillel and Shammai, for the sake of heaven, and the conflict of Korach and his followers, not for the sake of heaven.

Notice something.

The Mishnah says Korach and his followers, not Korach and Moshe, because the real conflict, says the Ma'ara, was not between Korach and Moshe.

So this is good rules to know when you're learning the Mishnah.

When it says, Who are Beis Shammai and who are Beis Hillel? What it means is there were a group of Scholars who followed the approach of Shammai.

And there were the groups of scholars who followed the approach of Hillel.

Because the students are like his household.

That's why it's called Beis Shammai and Beis Hillel.

The rabbi.

Wherever you see the term rabbi, that's our holy rabbi.

And then when people would say, how do you have such a chutzpah? You say, what do you mean? I honor him so much that he's greater than a name.
