2026 Fall On-Air Appeal, Day 3

So I'm at the diner, and Ted is on one side, and it's Roger, but maybe his name will come to me on the other.

And Roger looks like he hasn't taken a shower in months, tremendously long-bared, A cap on his head.

You could hardly see his face.

And they're cousins.

And in between them are four other men.

And every night they come to the diner and they fill the diner seats at the counter.

The diner has two sides to it.

It has the counter.

uh with booths on one side of the restaurant and round tables like a real dining room on the other side and we it hardly needs one waitress because let alone two so we have two or three at lunch hour it's the only time it's busy and it's kind of going out of business it's a raunchy area of the kipsy with an adult video store across the street and the the owner was shot and killed You take your life in your hands.

But I went there.

I was raised in Brooklyn.

Where do I care? So I went.

And I was serving the men at the counter.

And I guess I looked a little different than the 20-year-old drunk waitresses.

And they said to me one day, all right.

what are you? I said, what do you mean, what am I? We want to know what you are.

I said, I'm a waitress.

No, you're not.

What do you do? I said, I wait on the tables.

No, you don't.

What are you? And I said, well, they said, well, you're a teacher, aren't you? You're a teacher.

I said, well, I do teach.

And they'd say, see, I told you that.

See, I told you that.

And I learned what their food was.
