Toronto Maple Leafs overwhelm Colorado Avalanche with a 6-3 victory, raising critical questions around Colorado's goaltending. Can Mackenzie Blackwood seize the starter role, or will the Avalanche…
Meghan AngleyGuestChris MicieliHostZach PearsonHostWe'll talk about, you know, everything and Mackenzie Blackwood and all that, uh, craziness.
But, um, overall thoughts of the game because it seemed like the Avs played well offensively.
I have the bullet point, if you're watching on YouTube, it says, "Issues from last year remain." Um, is it too early to say that? Or no, like we, because it's the, you know, we're talking about the same things, I know it's only five games in, um, are we kind of going through the, the, the cycle of here we go again with certain things? But overall thoughts, Megan.

It's funny on the, between the pipes post-game altitude radio, Raj said the same thing with issues from the last couple of seasons kind of persisting, pointing out attention to detail with respect to D zone coverage, special teams-

And it's tough because I'm sure a lot of teams who go through difficult stretches can point to the very same things, but just seeing the inconsistencies in the Avs power play and seeing that that would've really helped to change the tide in this game.

And an otherwise PK that was top of the league last year really struggled in this game, certainly gives a little bit of cause for concern.

'Cause I think the issue that has plagued the Avs with goaltending has been question marks around goaltending.

Obviously, Georgiev was not the guy to get it done for them, and that's why they completely overhaul goaltending and bring in Mackenzie Blackwood with the intention of making him a starter.

And Wedgewood ascending to sharing the net last year was kind of an unexpected outcome.

Um, it's a really welcome relief that they can turn to two goaltenders on a given night.

But this was meant to be the runway for Mackenzie Blackwood to take the net back and leave no questions.

I think Jared Bednar's post-game assessment of it, especially keeping in mind this is off the cuff immediately after, is he doesn't hang those goals on Mackenzie Blackwood in how the coverage breaks down, but they need a save.

And I think this is the difference between a great goaltender and a goaltender who is just fine.

'Cause I do believe Mackenzie Blackwood is a starter, but the mark of a really great goaltender is one who can make a save that could essentially seal a game, wherein I think the Avs were doing a lot process-wise to create meaningful chances.
