#949 Nathan Winston: ⚾ When Quitting Isn’t an Option

Send us Fan Mail Nathan Winston was born with Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, a rare condition that resulted in the amputation of his left leg at age four. Doctors believed amputation would give him the best opportunity for a full life—but few could have predicted what came next. Nathan competed in basketball, football and baseball alongside able-bodied athletes. Behind the scenes, he endured chronic pain, broken prosthetics and moments of profound self-consciousness. During one basketball game, he repaired his prosthetic with an Allen wrench and duct tape before returning to the court. Before a high-school baseball game, he built a homemade splint for a cracked prosthetic foot and took the mound without telling his coach. Nathan eventually played professional baseball and now works as a high-school baseball coach and corrections officer in a youth facility. He shares how coaching, fatherhood and helping vulnerable young people have deepened his sense of purpose.
