Tonight on *Jaunty Haunts*, we’re stirring the cauldron — carefully-as we wander through the history of European witchcraft. Not the Halloween costume version… but the real, complicated, often tragic…
I mean, literally was over 10 years ago.
Um, I never took him up on it, 'cause at the time I wasn't really sure if I was up for it or into it.
I don't know.
So, you know, we do the fun things, the traditional things.
We do apple bobbing.
We have a great feast.
We play some games, and then things get darker.
I am told that one of the younger practicing witches wants to hex her ex Wants to hex her ex.
And I'm like, "Oh, boy, okay." I've never witnessed a hex.
Obviously I've heard about them.
I've heard that they have done those things, but that's not something I ever felt super comfortable with.
It really freaked me out and they said, "We know you've got something going on.
We'd love to use, you know, your energy in our circle tonight." And I was like, "I don't know about that." [laughs] And I felt very trepidatious.
But I was super young, I was like 18 or 19 I think, and they honestly kind of peer pressured me and it was kind of like this al- thing also of, okay, it's Halloween, what the heck, and also I was kind of like one foot in, one foot out of does this stuff really work or is it like a placebo thing that just helps us feel better about our choices and thoughts and emotions? So they're trying to convince me.
They said, you know, "He abused her.
He was horrible.
Like, Courtney, he really deserves this." Finally I said, "Okay.
Okay, but I'm not gonna like, I'm not gonna like say anything or like do anything active.
Like, you just, I just need to stand there?" And like, "Yeah, just stand in the circle and hold our hands, and then we'll do stuff in the center of the circle." So I was like, "Okay." So we go outside, and it's a full moon.
Not a lot of neighbors, so we were pretty safe out there, and they had a big stump in the front yard that they laid out all of their equipment.
[laughs] That's not the right word.
You know, their, their chosen objects, their, their tools, and one of which was a cow tongue.
