Maile Wicklander, founder of Tula Yoga in Chicago, talks with J about staying committed to a deeper model of yoga…
Maile WicklanderGuestIn the moment that you are listening to this, would you say that you hold a positive vision of the future? [laughs] That's quite a question for me to be asking here, but I'm thinking about that because I had this heart-to-heart conversation with my sixteen-year-old daughter today.
It's rare that we sync up and I catch her in a moment where she's sort of present and open and engaging me in the way that she was, and it was a really deep, meaningful conversation.
She was asking me about things that are happening in the world and what I think about them.
And I know I've seen all those statistics that show, like, how much better things have gotten, you know? Like, how much more lifespans have increased and, you know, so many things are better now than they were in the past.
And illnesses, you know, I, I understand that there's been all of these improvements or whatnot.
But I guess I think in the past, at other times in my life, I had an idea where, you know, we were evolving as a human species and our, our consciousness was raising and that eventually the world was going to mirror that.
Like, it was going to be expressed that if enough people raised their consciousness up and held visions for humanity and the future that were, like, positive and healthy, that that would be expressed, like, in our politics and in, like, global policies and that we could, like, achieve more, like, harmony on the planet, you know, that we were evolving in that direction, however slowly.
There could be some kind of spiritual evolution happening that you could call a raising of consciousness.
But I don't think that's gonna be changing the world of man and our politics and the wars.
I think she was looking for that from me, 'cause she's looking to go out into the world.
I t- I talked about what I was struggling with with her, and I think she appreciated that, but I guess I, I wanna have a positive vision of the future.
I guess it just depends on what that vision is and whether it involves us being able to affect change in the broader world, which I don't know that we can.
