In June 1959, newspapers pile up outside the Kostyniuk home in South Wellington until neighbours find the house ransacked, the phone line cut, and the bodies of Andrew “Curly” and Elizabeth “Lizzie”…
No arrest in double killings.
The brutal knife murderer of an elderly South Wellington couple is still at large.
Though detectives and RCMP have been working around the clock to track down the killer of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Kostinik, no arrests have been made so far.
Fear has gripped residents of the quiet Nanaimo suburb following the savage knife slayings of the couple found clutching blood-stained bedclothes in the bedroom of their home on the Old Island Highway.
Doors and windows of South Wellington homes, which, up to the discovery of the slain couple, remained unlocked, have now been bolted in fear that the still-at-large killer may strike again.
A resident of the area who was questioned by police has been committed to a mental institution for observation.
So far, there is no definite suspect, stated Sergeant Peter Gregory of Victoria CIB, who is heading the investigation into the slayings which took place sometime early Saturday.
And now, almost 70 years later, the Kosteniuk's great-great-granddaughter, Shawna, has uncovered the original documents in the BC archives.
And I was like, "Oh, my gosh." I got a coffee and I sat by my fireplace, and I just read the whole thing, just trying to really envision everything.
