Throughout the 20th century, intrepid explorers visited the park looking for gold and other resources, never to return.

When the RCMP investigated their disappearances, they found their remains.

These events led people to believe that the park was haunted, or that something supernatural was at play, and further events would solidify this belief.

The RCMP were able to deduce that those who passed through the park likely did so either from exposure or at the hands of others, but this hasn't stopped the legend of the Valley of the Headless Men from living on.

As if these incidents weren't enough to make Canadians think that Nahanni National Park was haunted, a spate of UFO sightings and mysterious plane crashes only added to their fears.

The Dene people have spoken about the park for many centuries, passing down folk stories through the generations of monsters and unexplainable things in the park.

Mounties in Alberta say two people have died in separate hiking incidents in Banff National Park last week.

A twenty-four-year-old man was reported missing after his satellite tracker stopped moving and was later found dead near Recondite Peak.

The RCMP say he was an off-duty hiking guide and was carrying climbing equipment and a helmet.

Since the end of the Second World War, parents in and around, I don't know how to say that word, were increasingly pressured by the Canadian government and Christian churches to relocate and institutionalize their children for schooling.

Indeed, when a local RCMP station opened in 1953 and the Anglican and Catholic missions were established in 1962, government and church agents impose new levels of surveillance on Indigenous families.

I can never say cops are good.

I never will.

This book club was really to give Indigenous people a voice because for over 150 years, we've been suppressed and our stories have not been told.

And so in the 1996 Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, many of our elders did not, share their stories.

And these stories that were shared, both in this report and the National Inquiry reports, these were ones that the RCMP wouldn't even write down.

These are ones that nobody would acknowledge to be true.

Mike writes, "RCMP depot is in Regina." Yes, it is.

It's been there since 1885 in terms of where Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers receive their training before being dispatched to any number of detachments across this great nation of ours.

Municipal policing, meanwhile, at least for the officers that serve here in the Victoria area, has taken place at the Justice Institute of British Columbia, New Westminster.

Um, for, as you heard the chief say, many years it has been normal for when new recruits get hired onto Vic PD, the first thing they do is they head over to New Westminster, to the Justice Institute of British Columbia, and receive the training they need to become police officers.

RCMP, it's different.

They'll get trained at Depot, which is further away, as all of us know.

But I'm trying to think of if it's ever happened, at least not in recent history, for Victoria to have its own police academy for, among other reasons, the ability to train a larger number of recruits faster because there just wasn't enough space at the Justice Institute itself.

I think some British Columbia, they had an incident where, um, somebody dressed as, in a Cat in the Hat costume started chasing a teenager.

So the Royal Canadian Mounted Police opened an investigation, eh? And, uh-

And I'm wondering whether because there's still investigation with the RCMP and Transport Canada to get this vessel up to the surface, I don't know how they're going to do it from that depth, but we haven't seen any change.
