You ready to hear this piece of shit? I will not talk about my plot overview like that.

It's 13 ABY, and Wedge Antilles has just been broken up with by Kwisux, the hot bird lady.

Granted, he wanted to break up with her too, but man, he's tired, and he doesn't know who he is really.

But on his way out the door, he is stopped by General Kraken, who has a mission for him.

Wedge is to go to the recently contacted planet of Atamar with other pilots of his choosing to initiate diplomatic contact, because Atamar has the capacity and resources to produce the amount of proton torpedoes that Wedge has been lobbying for the New Republic to invest in for years.

Wedge and some other pilots have to be the ones to go, because the people of Atamar hold pilots in extremely high esteem.

This first contact will be documented by an official New Republic documentarian, Halas, whose chosen means of cinematography is a protocol droid's head attached to her shoulder.

As they are about to land on Atamar, Wedge and the pilots he's chosen as part of his diplomatic retinue, Tycho Selju, Wes Jansen, and Haby Klavian, are challenged by some young hotshot pilots and the gang get their first taste of Atamari culture.

That is, there is a high value placed on victory in combat, which manifests in a robust dueling practice on land and in the sky.

In fact, because of her skill in blast sword combat, there is a young woman named Cheris who is appointed to guide the New Republic delegation around this region of Atamar called Khartan.

First of all, Atamar does not, in fact, have a unified planetary government, meaning that the boys can help initiate trade with the nation of Khartan, but without a unified government, Atamar can't exactly join the New Republic.

Second of all, the Peritur, which is the people of Khartan's name for their leader, of Khartan, hasn't just initiated contact with the New Republic, there's also an imperial delegation on the ground, also trying to build ties with Adhemar.

And finally, Atamar actually must have been on the New Republic's radar for longer than Wedge was led to believe.

Well, how does he know this? It's because our girl, Ayela Wasiri, is on planet and very undercover, and such things take time to develop.

Side note, Ayela has her guard up around Wedge, and when he asks about this, she says that they're not friends anymore.
