Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

You know, it looked nice.

Calm Meany, who I will always remember from Deep Space Nine.

I love his character in this.

Because again, they could have written him as like obtuse and kind of autistic and a bit pushy.

Well, all the good Star Treks have their own channel streaming 24-7 on Pluto for free.

So I actually just watched the ending of Deep Space Nine and Voyager the other day.

Felt pretty good.

You watched

both of the endings on the same day?

They were like, I watched the ending of one the night before and the ending of the other the morning after.

Because I'd switch back and forth between Deep Space Nine and Voyager.

If it was an episode I'd seen recently or could remember everything that happened, I would go to the other one.

It was like, "Oh, can you tape those for me?" And so they did, but because we had DirecTV, at the time, the, that satellite stuff, there were no local channels.

And because Beast Wars was a syndicated program just like Star Trek: The Next Generation, just like Deep Space Nine.

Like, that's why, like, I, I think if, if somebody remembers our discussions about Deep Space Nine, like, that's why, like, my dad never watched, like, Deep Space Nine and Voyager until I came back to, uh, the Bay Area in, like, around 2007 or whatever.

Because at that point it was like I brought all my DVD sets back with me, and he was like, "Hey, you got anything to watch?" And I, you know, I was like, "Oh, what about this?" And, and so, and then eventually he started watching, you know, the, the other Star Trek shows, 'cause he had never seen them before.

And the reason why is 'cause there wa- we, we...

I like Transformers.

Like, let's see what this is about." Like, I, I wasn't willing to dismiss it, but...

And I know I, I mentioned Star Trek before, but I feel like my track record with Beast Wars is a lot like my track record with, like, every Star Trek show outside of the original series in that I check out the pilot, I go, "What the fuck is this shit?" And then a few seasons go by, and then I stumble into something, whether it's, you know, Worf joining the crew with Deep Space Nine in Season 4, or, you know, I don't know, like Seven of Nine, or, you know, what- whatever it is.

It's just-

Don't get me wrong, I love the battles in DS9, but it just, it doesn't hit the same.

Or even in Picard season three, like, the, the Enterprise zipping the way it does.

The Enterprise can't move over like that.

Even the good ones are bad.

Yeah.

Like Ross from DS9, he was kind of a jackass, too.

Yeah, yeah.

They just...

I- in order for our protagonist, Benjamin Sisko, in Deep Space Nine to see and hear and understand them, they use-

... people that he knows.

Hell yeah, you do

... you, you do say they like to appear...

We're talking about Deep Space Nine now, not even the show we're talking about.

I'm sorry.

Yeah.

You know? DS9 gets better.

Kira and Dax are both strong female characters, but still they're mostly dudes.

Uh, Voyager, you could argue most of the best characters on Voyager are female.

Well, because they don't have a high definition version.

[laughs] Do you think that there are some Early Edition nerds, like DS9 nerds, who are like, "They could very easily spend the money to remaster this"?

Yes.

[laughs] Did you look into it? Is there an Early Edition news group?

Both episodes explore the agonizing gray area where a decorated war hero turns renegade because they see a geopolitical threat that peacetime leadership is allegedly ignoring.

Now let's look at Deep Space Nine.

The two episodes are in the pale blue light and the die is cast.

While structurally distinct, orders of magnitude channels DS9's willingness to interrogate the high ethical cost of command, forcing a junior officer to look a superior in the eye and draw a hard moral line against institutional drift.
