On this episode of Hollywood Obsessed, I'm speaking with actor, contortionist, and mime artist Doug Jones, who's best known for portraying a variety of non-human creatures in Oscar-winning films like The Shape of Water and iconic science fiction television series like Star Trek Discovery.
Originally from Indianapolis and a graduate of Ball State University, Doug moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to pursue his acting dreams.
He first caught the public's attention as the unforgettable Mac Tonight, featured in a series of iconic McDonald's commercials, launching a career unlike any other.
Doug is perhaps best known for his incredible work beneath elaborate prosthetics and makeup, portraying characters like Billy Butcherson in Hocus Pocus, the Amphibian Man in The Shape of Water, and Saru, the beloved Kelpien officer in Star Trek Discovery.
For five seasons, Doug brought remarkable depth and humanity to Saru, earning a special place in the hearts of Star Trek fans.
He's also a longtime contributor of visionary filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, appearing in several of his acclaimed films, including Mimic, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy II, The Golden Army, Crimson Peak, and the Oscar-winning best picture, The Shape of Water.
Beyond these extraordinary roles, Doug's impressive resume includes Batman Returns, Mystery Men, Fantastic Four Rise of the Silver Surfer, and television favorites such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Strain, Falling Skies, and What We Do in the Shadows.
With more than 25 films, numerous television appearances, and over 90 commercials, Doug Jones has truly redefined what it means to be a character actor.
Needless to say, it's an honor to have him here today to discuss his amazing career.
We've met a number of times, but the last time we met was through my friend, Russell Todd, who was on the program a while ago.
That's how Hollywood land works, isn't it? Someone knows someone that knows someone, and y'all meet each other and you get together later.
