Well, this morning we continue our series in the New Testament letter of 2 Peter, where the Apostle Peter writes the earliest believers in Asia Minor in the midst of increasing persecution, including his own impending martyrdom, to encourage them, to challenge them, and to address heresies that have made their way through the church in the few years since his first letter, 1 Peter.

Well, in his greeting that we read in last week's text, Peter reminded his readers and us by extension about the central truth of the gospel.

He started with the most important thing, that we are saved solely by the grace of God, not by our own doing.

And that we have been invited to know God personally while we wait for the day that we will forever be with him.

Well, this morning, Peter gets into the meat of his letter, and we begin to see some of the theological issues or heresies that have been circulating throughout the church in the years since he last wrote.

As already mentioned, some false teachers have infiltrated the church and Peter uses this letter, takes this opportunity to set his brothers and sisters in Christ, his children in the faith straight, that they would keep their eyes fixed on the true gospel and what it looks like to live lives that glorify God while they're on this earth.

And so with all that said, I invite you to turn with me in your copy of the Scriptures to 2 Peter, starting at chapter 1.

His divine power... has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of him who has called us to his own glory and excellence, by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises so that through them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word and we pray today that we would leave a little different than how we came as a result of encountering it.

Give us soft hearts that your word would land on fertile soil this morning, that we would see growth in our lives because you have kindly spoken to us.
