EP23 | Frida (2002)

Well, first I just wanted to point out that there are, I think a couple documentary type films swirling out there.

Um, about Frida and there's a more recent documentary that came out just a couple years ago that uses her actual journal entries and archival footage and it's supposed to be excellent and I have to say I watched the trailer today and it looks super cool so I look forward to watching that but the film that we're talking about today is a more mainstream approach to a biopic of Frida's life stars Selma Hayek as Frida Kahlo Alfred Molino as Diego Rivera.

And Jeffrey Rush as Leon Trotsky.

So Robin, I'm very curious to hear your feelings on that.

And shout out to Robin's dog, Leon.

Not a coincidence, folks.

Other notable actors in the film.

Ashley Judd.

I was like, that actress looks like Ashley Judd.

And then later on, I was doing my research.

I was like, oh, that's because it was

Judd.

Roger Reese.

Edward Norton, a very, very young and adorable Diego Luna.

And Mia Maestro, who plays Frida's sister, Christina.

The film itself was directed by Julia Taymor.

Her other films that you may know are Across the Universe, which was like a Beatles riff, which Casey refused to watch with me because he's a Beatles purist, so I'll have to watch it on my own sometime.

And The Glorias, which is, again, this seems to be kind of Julia Taymor's thing is like a mainstream take at a non-mainstream person.

So Gloria Steinem.

So Julia's got a thing for strong female characters.

That's what that movie's about.

I've never seen that either.

But Taymor also has some credits and recognition in theater.

She directed one of the renditions of The Lion King on Broadway.
