contemporary concerns which i don't think should be contemporary concerns so i'm i'm kind of in tune with the way he feels about a lot of things that are happening in the modern world and i liked it a lot i really enjoyed reading it look what you made me do by john lanchester and i was was i ever a lefty no i've always been a milquetoast liberal But there was a time when I was more interested in possibly being a member of the radical left than I am now.

And so I've read a lot about the radical revolutionaries like Trotsky.

And there is just such a good book at the moment.

It's by Josh Island, who's, I think, a... a UK-based reporter, The Death of Trotsky, the true story of the plot to kill Stalin's greatest enemy.

Apparently, he doesn't bring out anything that is new.

What he's done is condense a heck of a lot of material about this.

And yes, he does go back to Lenin's role.

in the Russian Revolution.

It was relatively moderate in its policies and attempted to accommodate all revolutionary factions, including the Bolsheviks, who were the smallest minority.

When the February Revolution occurred, Lenin and Trotsky were not even in Russia.

Lenin was in Switzerland and didn't arrive until April.

Trotsky was still in New York writing propaganda and giving speeches.

The second revolution, called the October Revolution, was the one through which the Bolsheviks came to power.

It was, in fact, no revolution at all.

But six years of actual living inside the new socialist utopia shattered his illusions.

In his acclaimed book, Workers Paradise Lost, he summarizes the true meaning of the October Revolution.

Way to own it, sister.

But she gives several examples like Che Guevara, Mao, Lenin, Trotsky, Ho Chi Minh.

For some reason, she doesn't mention Stalin.

I think Stalin had an issue with his head.

The first reason is very simple.

It's to do with trying to reclaim the real revolutionary tradition of what happened in Spain in the 1930s.

And it's important to reclaim that tradition because the mainstream interpretation, the mainstream narrative of the Spanish Civil War that dominates left-wing circles across the world is one that presents the conflict really as one between democracy and fascism.

And this tends to obscure the fact that what happened in Spain in 1936 and 1937 was one of the most profound social revolutions that we have seen in the international working class movements since the Russian Revolution of 1917 and after.

Spain had been ruled by a military dictatorship for the past decades, so it was kind of the first election that had taken place in that period.

This republic year was the first real attempt to establish a modern liberal parliamentary democracy in the history of the Spanish state.

In the 1930s, Spain was an example of what the Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky described as uneven and combined development.

It was a place in which, you know, there were big cities dominated by industry and a huge working class, millions of strong had developed in those places.

He and Harrison have published several articles in Jacobin, The New Republic, Inside Higher Ed, Against Professional Philosophy, The Verso Blog, On a wide range of subjects, including questions of anti-Semitism and the rise of the alt-right, the need for a more systematic philosophical framework for the political left, criticisms of futurist and acceleration thought, even movie reviews.

They did a humorous review of the Trotsky miniseries on Netflix.

He's also the editor of a very useful textbook of ethical thought experiments called The Moral Labyrinth, and he's currently completing a book on Spinoza and toleration.

In the leafy neighborhood of Coyoacan, history buffs can stroll to the Leon Trotsky House Museum, established in 1990 in a fortress-like mansion where the Russian revolutionary attempted to take refuge from Stalin and survived multiple assassination attempts before he was stabbed to death with an ice axe in 1940.

The garden still has Trotsky's chicken coops and rabbit hutches.

A stone stele adorned with a hammer and sickle contain his and his wife's ashes.

Trotsky had fled to Mexico City in 1937, and he, too, had a brief affair with Kahlo, who, with Rivera, was a pillar of the left-wing arts community in Coyoacan, then a rustic village south of the city.

The neighborhood today is part of the metropolis's urban sprawl, but it maintains its old-world charm with colorful handicraft markets, verdant plazas lined by cafes, and one of Latin America's oldest churches built atop an Aztec cemetery.

For decades, Coyoacan's main attraction has been Casa Azul, the Blue House, where Kahlo was born in 1907, spent her childhood, and later lived with Rivera.

Yeah, one thing that people don't understand about these leftists is that they are trained and ideological revolutionaries.

They are students of Trotsky and Lenin.

They worship, like we have a young communist league on my campus, and they put posters of Lenin and Stalin and Mao.

Like, they are communist.
