EPWS | 14. Marva & Michael

Welcome to another Wedding Story Wednesday! This week, you're invited to the wedding of Marva & Michael, which took place in September of 2022 at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, in Corona Del Mar, California. While not a sailing couple, Michael and Marva used a lot of nautical and timeless vibes for their semiformal, classic wedding. While they tried to keep the guest list down, it kept growing and growing until the couple was looking at 180 guests. They sent paper invitations to their guests from the States, and digital ones to those overseas. Keep an ear out for how their guest list expanded as relatives invited relatives, and how the couple gracefully handled it. This couple chose not to have a wedding party and found that it streamlined the focus on the day of the wedding, especially when it came to getting ready. With a day-of coordinator, Karen Kupke, absolutely nailing the assignment, the couple felt they were in great hands as they arrived to enjoy their big day. The couple participated in a zaffa, with drummers and flutes playing as they danced into the wedding reception. It often symbolizes the bride leaving her home and joining the groom’s home. After toasts, dinner, dancing, and a cake cutting, the couple brought out belly dancers to entertain the guests who stayed late into the night. Marva and Michael were one of the couples I interviewed for research for our upcoming book *Emily Post’s Wedding Etiquette*, out in February of 2027.
