What determines "trophy"--a number, an animal, or the hunt effort? Boone and Crockett Club's Tony Schooner and Mike Opitz join Ramsey to challenge modern trophy…
Tony SchoonenGuestWelcome back to Mojo's Duck Season Somewhere podcast, where today we're gonna talk about fair chase trophies.
What does trophy really mean anymore? Joining me to talk about this is CEO Tony Schunen of Boone and Crockett, and Mike Opitz, VP of Big Game Records.
It, but here we are, we're recording, uh, late August, and you just got back from high up in the mountains.
Eh, well, it kinda started last year, 'cause I was up in the Yukon la- Um, this, this time year, a year ago, and I spent, I spent 12 days in the Ruby Range in the Yukon chasing Dall sheep and did not kill a ram.
Went back this year and on day eight, finally, which I'm calling day 20 to get it done, uh, we finally, um, caught up with this ram that we had chased all over the mountains for, like, several days.
And, uh, yeah, it was everything a sheep hunt offers, but we finally got her done.
So, so you're up in the mountains, very, uh, steep and, and difficult terrain, especially for a duck hunter from Mississippi.
And, uh, I live, I live at sea level or below, and, uh, I have, I have marsh legs.
But so, so when you're out there hunting these sheep, do you see just one and go for them? Or explain, explain the whole drama that goes into the, the physical output to find and locate and what you're looking for on, on a stone sheep hunt like that.
Yeah, and this will tie in well, I think, with our conversation because the, the rules up there in the Yukon are a sheep has to be either full curl or a minimum of eight years old.
It's, it's, you know, it's a highly selective, uh, endeavor because you, you... that's the only rams you wanna take.
