Sarah Hastings-Woodhouse is an AI safety writer and researcher who went down the AI doom rabbit hole in 2023 and never came back up. After a year as digital communications officer at the UK AI…
Sarah Hastings-WoodhouseGuestLike, when I came across Geoffrey Hinton saying that AI was gonna kill everyone, I was like, "Well, now I really wanna know whether AI is gonna kill everyone." Like, maybe I'm, like, somewhat dispositionally obsessive as a person, but I was like, "I have to find the answer to this question." Like, I have to, like, keep hunting until I find the expert consensus, which, as it turns out, doesn't really exist.
[laughs] Um, but, like, it's a bit confusing to me that so many people might stumble across a headline like that and then not just feel compelled to, like, keep searching for the answer to this question.
And I was like, "Okay, well, what about, like, answering prayers? Can't we just, like, make a prayer? Like, how would that work?" And he's like, "I don't know how that works." And I'm like, "Wait, but if I thought religion was true, I'd be, like, obsessed with figuring out how it works." [laughs] So you know, I don't wanna necessarily bring religious, religion in the mix.
I know it's a sensitive subject, but what you're saying about, like, hey, this makes me want to update everything I know about the world, I, I think that you're right to do that.
I think that's, like, a healthy practice to make sure that your beliefs are, are propagating and things like, hey, you know, retirement planning, like any other implications this may have, I think we should think through the implications.
I think this is a tendency I have to, like, want to follow my beliefs to their logical conclusion.
[laughs] Um, and I guess many people just kind of don't live like that, and maybe that makes a certain amount of sense.
But maybe this is what differentiates people who are, like, more AGI pillable from everyone else.
