In 2001, Anna Nicole is offered a reality show from E! This is the early, early days of reality television, so throughout the show, we're not really seeing, like, drama that we're following episode to episode.
This really is cameras invited in to follow Anna Nicole around, doing relatively mundane things, so, like, shopping for a new home, going to the dentist.
We do see her, like, going to parties and doing appearances, but the idea really is that the audience had an opportunity to get to know Anna Nicole.
The characters on the show are Anna Nicole herself, her assistant Kim, her son Daniel, and Howard K. Stern, her lawyer/publicist/everything, and also her dog, Sugar Pie.
The Anna Nicole Show is not available for streaming, but some gem of a channel does have them up on YouTube, and I re-watched The Anna Nicole Show in preparation for this episode, and I will say that I have mixed feelings on it watching it back.
Like, of course, there's this element of nostalgia, like, I enjoy the legacy of Anna Nicole, so I love, like, being able to see her in this light.
And also, there are moments where the show is really funny, and that was one of the big selling points of Season 1 especially.
However, because I'm watching it, like, through the lens of all of this other context about her life, there are definitely some moments where I feel like as a viewer she seems to be struggling with something.
People loved her kind of eccentric, sometimes erratic personality, and I feel like her personality really came through on Season 1.
There are some people that were close to her in childhood or in her youth that have spoken about The Anna Nicole Show.
She did a couple of interviews actually crying, saying that as she was watching The Anna Nicole Show, she really felt like her cousin needed help, like the people around her weren't supporting her mental health.
There was some speculation around this time that Anna Nicole may have been using substances or was misusing her medications.
And like I said, there are elements of this show that I really enjoy, and then there are also elements that I feel like I can't fully enjoy because I'm understanding it in the wider context of her life right now.
If you've recently re-watched The Anna Nicole Show, I would love to know your thoughts.
How are you perceiving it differently now than you may have when you first watched it? There are some scenes that land as just truly silly, and the people around her are clearly there to say yes to her.
