047: A Different World Netflix Revival: Did They Get It Right? | Part 1

A Different World is back, Hillman College is open again, and everybody has an opinion! But did the Netflix revival live up to the legacy of one of the most iconic shows in Black television history? For an entire generation, *A Different World* was more than a television show. It introduced millions to the HBCU experience, gave us unforgettable characters like Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, and helped shape how Black America viewed education, relationships, identity, and culture. Now, decades later, Netflix has brought us back to Hillman College, and the conversation is just getting started. In this episode of *Bonnerfide Conversations*, host Gerard Bonner brings together Shayla McIntyre, Patrick Schaefer, and Will Ferrell for an entertaining, nostalgic, and sometimes controversial discussion about the return of *A Different World*. We're talking about: - The Netflix revival: Did the creators get it right, or should they have left this classic alone? - Brandy's new theme song: Was she the right choice, or should they have brought back the original? - Dwayne and Whitley's legacy: How does the new generation of Hillman students measure up? - The original cast's return: Which appearances delivered the biggest emotional moments? - Black representation on television: Why an unapologetically Black college experience still matters in 2026. - The HBCU effect: How the original series influenced generations of students to attend historically Black colleges and universities. From Aretha Franklin and Boyz II Men to Brandy, Debbie Allen, and the unforgettable Hillman family, this conversation explores what happens when a beloved piece of Black culture returns for a new generation. And yes, we've got some opinions about that theme song! Whether you watched *A Different World* every Thursday night in the 1980s and 1990s or just discovered Hillman College on Netflix, this is a conversation you don't want to miss. This is Part 1 of our special two-part conversation. Join us as we revisit the legacy, celebrate the return, and ask the question everybody is debating: Did they get *A Different World* right? Join the conversation! What did you think about the Netflix revival? Who was your favorite returning character? And was Brandy the right choice for the theme song?
