He Did One Thing in 2001. China Has Been Coming After Him Ever Since.

And that episode relates to what I was going to ask you next.

About 2001, you went to Beijing, to Tiananmen Square.

Right.

So then this ties into what your question about learning Chinese was.

It was all around the same time.

So because I started practicing Falun Gong, I said, well, this practice is from China.

Most people who practice it here, even in California, are ethnic Chinese.

A lot of them don't speak English.

Why don't I learn a language? I can study the teachings in their original language.

I can communicate with the other Falun Gong practitioners.

I can maybe talk to Chinese people and talk to them about the persecution.

So then I started studying at Pomona College in California, in Southern California, in Claremont.

And I said, well, I'll learn Chinese.

And I learned Chinese and majored in Chinese history with a minor in Chinese and fell in love with the language.

It was such a beautiful language.

And I remember class was at 8 a.m. and all the students would show up all groggy from the night before.

And I was like, let's go Chinese.

Let's go.

And I would just memorize the cards.

This was pre-smartphone.

So it was all flashcards, handwritten.

I'd write the character on one side and the meaning and the pronunciation on the other side.

I'd lay them out on the floor and move them like a battlefield, memorizing all of them.

I just loved the language.

And then one day, Somebody came to the school and talked about study abroad in China.
