1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre

Three Hong Kong activists sentenced today on prison terms.

The trio once organized annual vigils in Hong Kong commemorating the 1989 Tiananmen Square Massacre.

The case highlighting the erosion of civil liberties under a draconian Beijing-imposed national security law.

The Tiananmen Square protests were a series of demonstrations by intellectuals and students in the People's Republic of China from the 15th of April to the 4th of June 1989.

Because of the tragic way the events culminated, the protests became known around the world as the Tiananmen Square Massacre.

The roots of the protests aren't easily defined, though, nor did they speak in one homogenous voice.

But two main groups were identifiable, those mainly urban industrial workers who believed that since 1978, political and economic reforms made under Deng Xiaoping had gone too far.
