President Donald Trump said yesterday that the Pentagon will no longer live stream the firing squad execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan.
Uh, that is very important because there was great pressure, uh, there was bipartisan criticism.
But Trump said on social media that publicly airing the execution, and I quote directly, "might have been a strong deterrence for the world to witness how America deals with terrorists and scum like Hasan." But then the president added this, "Many very good and well-meaning people would rather not watch him die through streaming or through any other visual device." And of course, the announcement, the announcement earlier this month from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that Hasan's execution would be a public event.
And then there was blowback from both Republicans and Democrats, including the vice president, with many pointing out that the images could be used to fuel radicalization, not to mention the fact that this kind of execution would be unconscionable.
Now, the Pentagon chief spokesperson, Sean Parnell, said Trump and Hegseth discussed the decision to drop the live stream plans before the president's announcement on social media.
And to quote Parnell, "The secretary supports the president's decision, and they are completely aligned." When asked how the public execution comported with his Christian faith earlier this month, Vance said, "I don't know that that's actually going to happen." And of course it isn't.
Did you know, by the way, that Hasan is in a wheelchair? Were you aware of that? Are you cognizant of that fact? The minute I heard that, I said, "Oh my God." But really, this is wrong.
And, well, at least the president has backed down on a public airing of what happens, but it's still happening, and I object to that.
What we are setting as an example is something I would expect from Iran or Afghanistan, not from the United States of America.
And more than that, this morning's news brought the news that the president is considering his options with Iran, all of which involve military action.
I want you all to be aware that they are talking about using that huge bunker buster bomb.
Of course, they've announced they won't decide what to do until after the midterm elections.
My friends, there is something terribly wrong in this administration, something that needs to be addressed.
And by the way, you know that the Strait of Hormuz is not open despite what the administration says, and Iran is still firing drones and missiles, which are hitting American targets in the broader Middle East.
