In conversation with Tabby, we discuss her yearlong volunteer experience in Kenya as she shares her experiences. At twenty-one she moved from Australia to a remote village to teach at a high school…
Tabby RyanGuestWilderness Conversations HostHostI wanna get into the story which you've written in the book Give in a, in a second, but let's just go back to the beginning.
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you came to find the gospel message.

Um, so Dad had been brought up Catholic, and Mom's family didn't really have a religious background.

Um, and they sort of were probably, you know, not the most typical teenagers or early 20s.

They were really interested in exploring and learning about the Bible and, and what the, you know, what the teachings were.

So I guess the extended family wasn't Christadelphian, but, um, we grew up in a, in a Christadelphian household.

Hmm.

"You need to sort of seek this out yourself." Um, and I think I, I took that on and, and really a- appreciated that perspective of things, of making sure that you do something because you truly believe it's right, um, rather than because someone is telling you to.
Hmm.
And you got baptized, and you came to an age where you started looking outside of Australia for stuff to do, as it were.
And I think you did-
... uh, mission work and went to places before this actual event.

I was, um, I was always really keen to travel and to, like, s- see more of the world.

I had, like, a, a bucket list, you know, of 101 things to do as a teenager and, and that was sort of kickstarted the, the travel bug, I guess.

But I also had a real strong drive to do something to help people in need, and at that point in my life, I wasn't sort of aware of the needs in Australia and, and felt a really strong pull to, to helping people in extreme poverty, I guess.
