So what's going on here? For that, we have to go back to the beginning of the conversation when, um, Maitreyi asked her husband, "Teach me that by which immortality is attained." And her husband said, Yajnavalkya said, "All that is loved here is loved because of the self.
The husband is loved not for the sake of the husband, but for the sake of the self.
Anything that is loved here is loved for the sake of the self." "Atmanastu kamaya sarvam priyam bhavati." All is dear to us only because of the self.
So that which makes the self happy, therefore we love things for the sake of the happiness of the self.
And we find finally that everything is loved for the sake of the self, but the sa-- the self is not loved for anything else.
If something is loved for something, some other thing, that thing is loved more.
Whom do you love more? The toys or the children? Well, you'd be [laughs] per-pretty peculiar mom or dad if you love the toys more than the children.
You love the toys for the sake of the children, so the children are loved more than the toys.
Which gives you more happiness, your children or the children's toys? The children toys ma-- give you happy because they are your children's toys, not because, um, particularly you're very fond of the toys.
But your children, uh, love you, uh, you love them more because they make you more happy.
Similarly, anything that is loved for the sake of another, that another is loved more than, uh, the first one.
By that logic, the self is loved most than, more than anything else, and the self is not loved for the sake of anything else.
