2000 #7 David S. Ware ~ Surrendered

You know, as I opened about that question of free jazz, he's got so many wonderful albums.

But all the critics talk about this one.

They also talk about one other, which I was going to mention, Balladway.

Those two hit hardest because they're less likely a free jazz album.

And most of his other work is the free jazz music.

So I've been thinking about that all week long, listening to David play.

It's just blown me away.

He's phenomenal.

well okay had it not been for the top 100 albums that shook the world i'm not sure i would have understood this album to begin with it was our journey in the last 100 weeks that we've done with jazz wise uh that led me to be even able to understand and comprehend and enjoy this album uh that we're going to talk about tonight so you know I just made it on my note.

I haven't thought about it all week, but I'm not sure a first-time jazz listener, you know, you couldn't sit down and say, hey, listen to David Ware and get your wits about you.

So I'm just thankful that we're on the journey that we are on so that I can enjoy something like this album.

I'm glad you said that, Matt, because I feel like I have not arrived yet.

And so I'm pursuing that journey to learn to appreciate free jazz.

I'm not there yet.

And Matt, would you have called this a free jazz album?

No, I even made it in my notes.

This by no means is a free jazz album.

It's expression full.

It's full of expression.

But considering that there are still jazz rules going on here, you can't necessarily call it a free jazz album, in my opinion.

This is all my opinion as an un-connoisseur.

Now, there are a lot of twists and turns on the album where he does break the rules, but he always comes back and gets on the tracks and goes down that jazz lane.

That's a good thought about that.

It's not quite free jazz, but it's not not quite free jazz because he is a free jazz musician.
