Bremen

They encounter a German whaleship, the Jungfrau, or the Virgin, right? Yeah.

And, uh, they, you know, they come upon this, this sort of inept, inexperienced captain, uh, uh, Derek DeDeer, uh, who is the, uh, you know, he hails from, from Bremen.

This is a German ship.

And of course we start out with some of Melville's kind of you know, proud American chauvinism, like Sam was talking about his sort of, you know, respect for, for the, uh, for the peoples of what we might today call the global South, but his disdain for Europeans, uh, especially those who are no longer storied in the profession of whaling.

So on, over the weekend, I was at the FNB Art Fair taking pictures of art, and I made a short form documentary on it.

And I just kind of love what I do, you know? All you have to do is say to me, "Mills, grab a camera and come and take some pictures and behave." And I usually say, "Well, one out of two isn't bad."

And many of the men who seemed to know least about mercy were the men who had both wealth and culture.

Long before we reached Bremen, where for the first time I was to embark for America, the train was boarded by runners who tagged us to make sure of their prey.

The region near the railroad station was full of lodging houses whose motto was always to give as little as possible and get as much as they could.

Many of these houses were tributary to the sub-agent or agents.

The North German Lloyd is the aristocrat among the steamship companies.

It has always catered to the cabin, but it has a conscience which led it to farm out its steerage business, and the enticing, the grinding, and fleecing which I have witnessed were done by sub-agents, presumably without the knowledge of the company.

Bremen is an honest patrician city with a commercial aristocracy, and the North German Lloyd reflects the city.

The company is as good as its word, but the steerage passengers never got its word.

Without the European service module, Orion cannot function.

Airbus Defence and Space builds the module under contract to ESA, and the production line in Bremen, Germany, is already assembling service modules for Artemis III and beyond.

This represents a multi-billion euro industrial commitment by European governments, backed by years of engineering development and workforce investment.

A successful Artemis II validates this investment.
