Defending history: from Ninoy through EDSA to the present with Ging Deles and Kiko Aquino Dee

Send us Fan Mail *Watch the video premiere on* YouTube On August 21, 1983, Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., a staunch critic of the Marcos regime, was assassinated on the tarmac of what was then called the Manila International Airport. According to the Martial Law Museum, “Ninoy’s death ignited a fire among the opposition.” Less than 3 years after Ninoy’s assassination, the Filipino people went to the streets in a non-violent mass protest called the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution and ended the two-decade Marcos dictatorship. Here are some of the things that happened between then and now: Cory Aquino became president, and then 18 years after that her son Noynoy Aquino got elected; Martial Law victims received some reparations and billions of the Marcos’ ill-gotten wealth were recovered; however, in 2022 Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., son of the ousted dictator, got elected to the presidency and returned to Malacañang. And even before that, the Philippines was ravaged by Rodrigo Duterte’s violent “War on Drugs.” Given this context, our North Star for this wayfinding mission will be these questions: 1. Given the Marcoses' return to power, how do we reevaluate EDSA and the aftermath of Ninoy’s assassination? 2. How do we preserve the memories of the victims of Martial Law despite the efforts of some towards historical revisionism? 3. What should we learn from the people who helped topple the Marcos dictatorship, and how can we treat the project of building a more just and free society as an intergenerational responsibility?
