Nora LoretoGuestScott MartinHost[rock music] Welcome to The North State, the podcast that punches through the noise of the Canadian news media ecosystem.
As we are recording this very conversation, Prime Minister Mark Carney is hosting an investment summit in Toronto.
The point of this summit is to have rich investors from across the world take stakes into Canadian projects.
On September 9th, the Toronto Star obtained a document featuring some of the projects that Carney is opening up to private investment.
Mostly, this includes oil pipelines, renewable energy, mining, but there's also data centers, ports, and projects in the defense sector, uh, which I guess we'll find out because he does love that spending.
An article in The Breach, one of the few outlets actually bringing substantive criticism to the summit, lays out the case that this, it looks to be privatization free for all.
Big movers in the financial sector, including Scotiabank and Canadian Pension Plan, are interested in maximizing private investments in currently pr- public projects.
Now, this is a lot to get into, but, uh, at this point in history with these types of projects being implemented in places like Chile, the US, the UK, Australia, and Canada itself, there's really no argument against the fact that if this is implemented, it will worsen access to services, quality of services, and pretty much every outcome except for returns on investment for private entities.
But you wouldn't know that by the news coverage, so that's what we're going to talk about today.
Here to discuss this coverage of the neoliberal bonanza is independent journalist, author, and host of the Sandy Nora Talks Politics podcast, Nora Loreto.
