[upbeat music] I'm gonna do something a little different to start off today's conversation.

My entire knowledge, despite growing up on the East Coast and in Virginia especially, of the American chestnut tree started when I read The Overstory by Richard Powers.

I had no idea what this was about when I started it, which is how I like to read things now.

If more than one person I trust or source I trust recommends it, I try to go into it blind.

And then I thought, since that contextualized everything for me and set up this conversation all these years later, I thought I would read you a few parts of it that can contextualize this for you, whether you've already read this book like so many have, probably listeners of this show, or if it's new to you.

Twelve hundred miles east of where our main characters are, in the city where John Hole's mother Sue dresses and his father built ships, disaster hits before anyone knows it.

In the wood of Chinese chestnuts destined for fancy gardens, a tree in the Bronx Zoological Park turns October colors in July.

Within a year, orange spots fleck chestnuts throughout the Bronx, the fruiting bodies of a parasite that has already killed its host.
